Here's what we were working with on this one - a roof that looked worn and tired from the outside, but was hiding something a lot worse underneath. Once we stripped everything off, we found sections of the decking that had completely rotted through. We're talking soft, crumbling wood with actual holes where solid structure should be. That kind of damage doesn't just happen overnight. It builds up over years of moisture working its way in, and if it goes unaddressed, you end up with compromised structural integrity - not just a cosmetic problem.

This is exactly why a proper tear-off matters. A roof-over - where new shingles get laid on top of old ones - would have buried that rot and made everything worse over time. We cut out all the deteriorated decking sections and replaced them with fresh material before anything else went on top. No shortcuts. The foundation of a good roof is literally the deck it sits on, and we weren't going to skip that step.

Once the deck was solid, we installed a full upgraded roofing system with new shingles, properly seated dome vents lined up along the ridge, and new pipe boots sealed in tight. The vent installation is worth pointing out - those dome vents are there to regulate attic temperature and airflow, which extends the life of your roof and helps with energy efficiency. Getting that right is part of doing the job correctly, not just making it look good.

The difference between the before and after is night and day. The old roof had algae streaking, worn-out shingles, and hidden rot eating away at the structure. What we finished with is a clean, uniform roofline with fresh charcoal shingles and properly installed components built to protect this home for years to come. We're proud of how it turned out, and more importantly, this homeowner can rest easy knowing their roof is actually solid now - not just on the surface.
